Main Street and Cary Street are located on the southern border of the Fan District and provide the Fan District with much of its commercial enterprise.

Main Street carries traffic west (one way) and is notable for its pastel colored buildings on the western edge of VCU (in the Uptown District) and numerous restaurants along its entire length.  Main Street is also home to much of the commercial office space available in the Fan and the combination of offices and lunch spots within walking distance make it especially popular with the professional crowd.

Cary Street carries traffic to the east (one way) and is more industrial than Main.  It runs parallel with The Downtown Expressway and many of the properties along the south side of Cary are impacted by their proximity to the highway.  Beginning at the intersection of Meadow, Cary Street has seen several projects that are either purely residential or mixed use were developed with varying degrees of success (usually in the form of condos or townhomes.)  As residents seek the loft living spaces so prevalent in Downtown, Jackson Ward and Manchester, Cary is the primary location west of VCU with the large majority of suitable buildings for conversion.
